Spring Allergies Be Gone!

4/27/2015

by Cindy Hebbard

Do you suffer in the spring with allergy symptoms like wheezing, sneezing, watery eyes, dripping in the nose or throat, persistent cough or recurring sinus infections? Are you ready to explore simple natural remedies that can help with all these discomforts and more?

Aromatherapy is an excellent option for people of all ages to find some relief. Breathing in the cleansing scents of pure essential oils used in aromatherapy can open narrow airways and help ease the pain and pressure. Look for thyme essential oil, or you could opt for oregano, lemon, eucalyptus, lavender, or others. Please don't apply these concentrated oils directly onto your skin. Try one or two drops onto a diffuser, onto the sleeve or collar of your jacket, or on a tissue next to your bed at night.

Chaga, Chaga. Ah, Fungi Honey.

Yes, I must confess I love chaga. And chaga seems to like me. At least that’s the way I feel when I’m drinking a nice deep decoction of it – because it’s like healing black gold in a cup.

But sometimes the Chaga-Heads drive me nuts. You know them, the folks who talk all misty eyed about the wonders of chaga.

Chaga-Head: “Chaga is so amazing. I lost my head in an accident once but thanks to drinking Chaga tea regularly it grew right back!!!”

Me: “Um, how did you drink the tea if you had no head?”

Chaga-Head: “That’s how amazing Chaga is, dude!!!”

*sigh*

But seriously, I really don’t blame them.

Understanding Cancer

4/14/2015

by Brendan Kelly

In my experience as an acupuncturist and herbalist, it’s very possible to address a significant diagnosis like cancer by waging peace, rather than the more common western medical approach of waging war on the condition. For Chinese medicine, an underlying issue with cancer is the diagnosis of heat which causes an over-proliferation of unhealthy cells. Rather than looking only at the symptom itself, in Chinese medicine we look to where the symptom is coming from.

Spring Cleaning: Body, Mind & Spirit

4/14/2015

by Patrice Green

You can feel it: the earth’s pent up energy just waiting to burst forth.  Now is the time to put the introspection and new ideas of Winter into action.   When we shift from survival mode to truly living we also tend to take stock of our surroundings with a clearer vision, so it is apropos that this time of year is also a time of cleaning, or getting rid of the old to make way for the new.  There’s often a deep desire to nest, simplify and purge that which no longer serves.

Seeds

4/14/2015

by Jenny Hauf

My hands, each of its creases and wrinkles illustrated in fine germination mix, hold the tiny promises. We cradle hundreds of them in our palms, keep thousands in vest pockets. Tenderly, carefully, we lay down the thick stubs of echinacea, the slivers of arnica, and the many shades of mad dog skullcap brown. Like all promises, not all of the potential within this myriad of seeds will be realized. However, I sow them and dream of the future that I’ll give to those that sprout.

In this season of spring, as buds are slowly bulging and I am shown my first blooming snowdrops, the birds are singing again. My day is filled with the sweetness of sounds and discoveries which, like some favorite words, I always forget until they sneak up on me and thrill me with their textures, their singular tones, the richness of their meanings.
