Class Descriptions:

Remembering our True Nature with Ancestral Healing Traditions
with Carlos Tanner

www.ayahuascafoundation.org

This class explores the profound wisdom of Ancestral Plant Medicine Traditions, rooted in indigenous paradigms and worldviews that honor the interconnectedness of all life. We'll delve into the spiritual paradigm, which recognizes the energy of our being as the foundation of our reality. Through the lens of psychedelic plant medicines like ayahuasca, we will examine how these sacred practices can reveal our true nature, helping us release false beliefs, heal from past experiences, and dispel negative energies. By embracing this non-material perspective, participants will discover pathways to enhance their health and well-being, fostering a deeper connection to themselves and the world around them.

Carlos Tanner has been studying ayahuasca and plant medicine in the Amazon Rainforest since 2003. As the director of the Ayahuasca Foundation, which he founded in 2009 in Iquitos, Peru, Carlos organizes healing retreats and educational courses led by indigenous curanderos. These programs help people heal from conditions ranging from depression to cancer or learn about Amazonian ancestral healing traditions. Since 2017, the Ayahuasca Foundation has partnered with Onaya Science to research the ayahuasca tradition’s effects on depression, anxiety, and trauma.

Ferment Your Vegetables!
with Flora Spivak

www.somervillefermfest.com

Fermentation is one of the oldest and safest forms of food preservation, relying on the power of friendly microbes to prevent food spoilage while increasing digestibility and nutritional value. In this class, you will learn how to make simple and safe vegetable ferments of your own using equipment typically found in a home kitchen.
Picture
Flora has been fascinated by fermentation since 2015, when she was surprised to receive a kombucha scoby as a birthday gift. Since then, she has combined her love of food, science, and teaching to share her knowledge and enthusiasm for fermented foods with the Boston-area community. This year, Flora organized the first Somerville Fermentation Festival, an annual event which celebrates the world of fermented foods and the people (and microbes) who create them. Flora draws inspiration from the concepts of community, transformation, and the cycles of nature which lie at the heart of this ancient practice.

Herbs to Nourish Frayed Nerves
with Mo Katz-Christy

mokatzchristy.com

Have you ever brushed past a lavender bush and felt your body react to the smell? The aromatic molecules in plants are some of the smallest active compounds they contain, and are so small that they can cross our blood-brain barrier and affect our nervous system. In this class, we will discuss two main herbal actions: adaptogens and nervines. Adaptogens are herbs that long-term improve our resilience to stressors, and nervines are herbs that directly affect our mood. These can uplift, relax, stimulate, or sedate. We will explore how stress shows up in the body and how herbs can work with our whole bodies to modulate our stress response. Come learn the science behind why you should “stop and smell the roses”!

Mo Katz-Christy (they/them) is a queer Ashkenazi Jewish herbalist born and raised in Cambridge, MA on unceded Massachusett land. They approach herbalism by connecting folks to the knowledge they already have about their body and herbs through working with kitchen medicine, ancestral traditions, and mulberries falling on the sidewalk! Mo graduated from a three-year clinical herbalism program at the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism in 2022. They work one-on-one with clients to address the root imbalances that are causing dysregulation and to promote long-term healing, focusing on gut health.
